College Basketball Top 25 Rankings: Week 3

North Carolina Basketball

If you aren’t impressed by the way the Kentucky Wildcats have played so far, you either didn’t watch their game against the Kansas Jayhawks — Kentucky made Kansas look like a JV high school team — or hate the Wildcats more than anything imaginable. Kentucky is the real deal. So is Gonzaga, Duke, Wisconsin, Miami (?) and many other teams.

25. Connecticut Huskies (3-1)

It didn't take long for the Connecticut Huskies to lose their first game of the season -- four games to be exact. Although the Huskies still have some talent, this is not the same team as last year. Not even close. Read into that however you would like, but this Connecticut team is a much different squad.

24. Michigan State Spartans (3-1)

Michigan State may already have one loss, but this Spartans team definitely has some talent. You better believe Tom Izzo will have this group ready to compete by the time conference play rolls around.

23. VCU Rams (3-1)

The VCU Rams certainly got off to a great start by beating Tennessee. Unfortunately, Villanova got the best of them in the Legends Classic. And by best of them, I mean the Wildcats beat the Rams by 24 points.

22. West Virginia Mountaineers (5-0)

West Virginia is certainly off to a great start. After all, it did manage to beat Connecticut, who won a championship last year. Sure, the Huskies have some work to do, but the Mountaineers could do some surprising this year.

The Arkansas Razorbacks more than likely won't win the SEC this year, but Bobby Portis and co. certainly look like they can hold their own.

Losing a player like Bryce Cotton definitely hurts, but it always helps when a player like LaDontae Henton steps up by averaging 23.4 PPG in the first five contests of the season. It also helps when Providence knocks off teams like Florida State and Notre Dame in those first five games.

19. UCLA Bruins (4-0)

19. UCLA Bruins (4-0)

The season is still early and UCLA has played a good amount of cupcakes so far, but two players on the Bruins are averaging 20 or more points per game. Now that is how you start off the new year.

18. Ohio State Buckeyes (3-0)

Greg Bartram-USA TODAY Sports

So far the Buckeyes have had no problem putting the ball in the hoop, as they are averaging 90.7 points per game. That number will more than likely go down once Ohio State starts playing quality teams left and right, but it is still a promising sign.

17. Miami Hurricanes (5-0)

Five games played and five games won for the Miami Hurricanes. I would say that is a pretty solid start. It helps when one of those games was a road victory over the Florida Gators.

A win over the Oregon Ducks looks nice this early in the season, but a win against the Villanova Wildcats in the very next game would have many people talking about the Michigan Wolverines. Michigan and Villanova will meet up in the Legends Classic championship on Tuesday night.

We are not going to know how good, overrated, mediocre or bad this team is until it is at full strength. Unfortunately, the Florida Gators' schedule is about to get very tough, as they are about to partake in the Battle 4 Atlantis, and have a date with Kansas in early December.

The San Diego State Aztecs have gotten off to a great start and have wins over Utah and BYU to prove it.

Like it or not, Georges Niang has the talent to win the Naismith, and Iowa State has the game to win the Big 12.

Villanova will likely enter the top 10 if it can capture a win over Michigan. If it does achieve that feat, it will have already beaten two ranked opponents on the year.

Make no mistake about it, Kansas is a good basketball team. Sure, it got clobbered by Kentucky, but that should tell everyone how good the Wildcats are.

Gonzaga has played four games and it has won all four in blowout fashion. It has also put up a boatload of points in the process (94.8 PPG).

As expected, the Wichita State Shockers are still undefeated. They still have a very long way to go to reach last year's winning streak, though.

Texas already has wins over Iowa and California. However, the ultimate prize would be a victory over Kentucky, which is a matchup that will take place on Dec. 5.

What do you know, another ACC team. North Carolina is going to be a very tough out all season long. With all of these powerhouses in the ACC this year, who knows how the conference will shape up. It should be war. And downright awesome.

The Duke Blue Devils have quite the squad. In fact, they should be better than last year's bunch. For what it's worth, Duke already has wins over Michigan State and Stanford. Both teams made the Sweet 16 last season.

John Calipari looks like a genius right about now -- well, on the court, that is. Off the court, he is wishing his daughter a happy birthday on the wrong day. All of that aside, his platoon system is working. Kansas would agree.
