Top 10 Backcourts In College Basketball Entering 2014-15 Season

The 2014-15 college basketball has tipped off, and it's already been exciting after Arizona's nail-biting win over San Diego State in the EA Sports Maui Invitational last night. There was a lot of good guard play last night, and this season is shaping up to be a great one. With that said, let's take a look at who made the cut for the top 10 college basketball backcourts entering this season.

It's a shame that Virginia's style of offense doesn't lend itself to having a player who immediately stands out, but it doesn't mean they don't boast a great deal of talent in their backcourt. Malcolm Brogdon is a top 25 player in the country regardless of position. Additionally, guards such as Justin Anderson, London Perrantes and the super-athletic B.J. Stith are all great complements to the offensive scheme that Tony Bennett runs.

Some would argue for Louisville to be higher than ninth on this list, but there's a lot of unfulfilled potential that needs to be seen before they can be ranked higher. Now that Russ Smith is gone, along with his high usage percentage, there is a lot of pressure on Terry Rozier and Chris Jones to have breakout seasons. Also, Quentin Snider and Anton Gill should provide solid production off the bench as their minutes will increase this season.

The Oklahoma Sooners' quartet of guards have a lot of offensive explosiveness to them. Buddy Hield has emerged into one of the best players in the country and is a favorite to win Big 12 Player of the Year. Additionally, Jordan Woodard and Isaiah Cousins are two extremely underrated guards who can do a lot of damage. Lastly, Frank Booker is extremely proficient at driving the lane or shooting the ball. Oklahoma's guards are the real deal.

Canada, especially the province of Ontario, has really been pumping out the quality players, and Kevin Pangos is the next one up. He will easily put up 20 PPG if he remains healthy. Additionally, Gary Bell Jr. serves as the perfect complement to Pangos' scoring ability. Backups Kyle Draginis and Josh Perkins help to provide a nice sense of balance to their backcourt as well. Lastly, USC transfer Byron Wesley is a top-100 player.

No pun intended, but the Wichita State Shockers shocked the world last year as they finished with the regular season undefeated with a 31-0 record. This was mostly due to the excellent and exciting guard play of Fred VanVleet and Ron Baker. Additional guards such as Tekele Cotton, Ria'n Holland and Corey Anderson Jr. also help to boost this team's backcourt proficiency. This is an extremely fun backcourt to watch.

Kansas returns a combo guard with massive breakout potential in Wayne Selden, Jr. His game, at least from an athletic standpoint, will remind many people of a young Dwyane Wade except Selden has a thicker frame. Selden's backcourt buddy at the point is Frank Mason, and he is poised to have a breakout season as well. Additionally, Devonte Graham and Brannen Greene provide the Jayhawks with solid guard play off the bench.

Kentucky returns their dynamic duo, the Harrison Twins, for their sophomore seasons with the hope of capturing the National Championship this season. Aaron is the sharp-shooting SG who seemed to always make a spectacular game-winning shot for the Wildcats last year. Andrew has elite size for a PG, but he will need to improve his play this year even though he wasn't bad last year. Tyler Ulis and Devin Booker provide elite options off the bench.

It may seem crazy that the Arizona backcourt is this high on the list after losing Pac-12 Player of the Year, Nick Johnson, to the NBA. However, they still boast a deep and effective group of guards led by T.J. McConnell who reminds head coach Sean Miller of himself when he was a PG for the Pittsburgh Panthers back in his playing days. Additionally, Gabe York and Kadeem Allen provide plenty of support with athleticism and great scoring ability.

Duke's backcourt is ridiculously loaded this year, and it all begins with their emotional and offensive leader, Rasheed Sulaimon. Additionally, the arrival of Tyus Jones is going to pay off immediately for the Blue Devils, as he is an extremely smart point guard who doesn't force the issue unnecessarily. Quinn Cook, Matt Jones and Grayson "Zero G" Allen help to provide deep support for one of the elite backcourts in the country.

The Tar Heels are led by PG wizard and National Player of the Year candidate, Marcus Paige. Paige continues the long line of excellent floor generals to have donned the Carolina blue and white over the last three decades. Nate Britt is an absolute pest on defense, and Justin Jackson is an SG whose stock is on the rise. Lastly, Joel Berry will serve as Paige's backup at PG, and the falloff is not big at all. Berry is the next great UNC PG.
