To no one’s surprise, the Kentucky Wildcats are off to a great start in the 2014-15 college basketball season. This team has the talent, depth and size to go undefeated this year. Argue that one if you must. Regardless, expecting no hiccups along the way would be foolish, and John Calipari and his team are about to experience a pretty big one.

Now, if any team can bounce back from an injury like this, it is the Wildcats. They easily have the personnel to make up for Poythress’ injury. With that in mind, this will definitely put a kink in the team’s platoon system. Not sure what Calipari will do to counter this injury, but something will clearly happen as a result.

Maybe Calipari will have one player going for almost the full 40 minutes? Maybe he will throw someone new into the platoon? Who knows? I do know that Kentucky has a very tough stretch coming up, so this couldn’t have happened at a worse time.

Next up, the Wildcats will play the North Carolina Tar Heels. After that, Kentucky will take on the UCLA Bruins and Louisville Cardinals. I highly doubt it, but Kentucky very well could drop its next three games.

Before we jump to those big of conclusions, let’s remember that Kentucky has the depth to make up for this injury. This team will be just fine in the end.

Regardless, it is a shame that Poythress is lost for the season. He has invested so much time into this team, and he even skipped out on the NBA draft the past two offseasons. Poythress will definitely be missed, but the Wildcats will survive.
