Don’t look now, but Steve Lavin and the St. John’s Red Storm are rockin’. The Red Storm actually didn’t enter the 2014-15 college basketball season with ridiculous expectations. Oddly enough, they are off to a great 8-1 start and are also ranked in the top 25.

So what could this team possibly want for Christmas? Other than being ranked No. 1 in the country or winning the 2015 NCAA tournament, there are plenty of things. Let’s go with winning the Big East, though. Sure, conference play hasn’t even started, the Villanova Wildcats are without a doubt the team to beat and we won’t find out about this Christmas miracle until March. Regardless, winning the conference title would certainly be a great Christmas present for the Red Storm.

It may not be too much of a stretch either. The Creighton Bluejays no longer have Doug McDermott, so they automatically are not as good as they were last year, and who knows about teams like the Georgetown Hoyas, Marquette Golden Eagles and Xavier Musketeers.

Villanova will be around all season long — there is no doubt about it. Don’t forget that St. John’s went on a six-game winning streak during conference play at one point last season, and brought back a bunch of talent from that team. The most notable player is returning leading scorer D’Angelo Harrison, who is — say it ain’t so — leading the team in scoring (19.7 PPG).

The Red Storm have already beaten the Minnesota Golden Gophers and Syracuse Orange. Their one loss came against the Gonzaga Bulldogs, who very well could have their best team ever.

Winning the Big East title will be no easy feat, even for Villanova, who finished 16-2 in conference play in 2013-14, but St. John’s certainly has the talent to do so.
