The two top teams in the conference, Kansas and Texas, went down to vastly inferior opponents last week. Consequently, both of the powerhouse teams have fallen in this week’s rankings and there is a new No. 1 team. Nobody in the Big 12 registered an impressive win in Week 7, but not many games were played over the holiday week. At the end of Week 8, conference play will begin for several teams.

The Wildcats continue to struggle in non-conference play, most notably with rebounding, and lost by two points to Texas Southern on Sunday. Kansas State has been the most inconsistent squad in the Big 12 thus far. Life doesn't get any easier for the team either, as they begin conference play on Jan. 3 when they travel to Oklahoma State.

9. Texas Tech (9-3) [Previous Rank: 9]

On Dec. 22, Tubby Smith’s team lost to Loyola (IL), and followed it up with a loss to Houston the day after. Both defeats were at home and neither game was close. The Red Raiders will look to bounce back against North Texas on Monday night, before hosting Texas on Jan. 3.

After losing to No. 17 Maryland on Dec. 21, the Cowboys were idle in Week 7. They’ll play Missouri at home on Dec. 30, before beginning conference play with a matchup against Kansas State on Jan. 3. Oklahoma State’s defense continues to be the strong point of this team, while ball movement on the offensive end needs to improve.

7. TCU (12-0) [Previous Rank: 7]

Unbelievably, the Horned Frogs remain undefeated seven weeks into the season. Even with a soft schedule, nobody could have predicted TCU’s hot start. Head coach Trent Johnson deserves a lot of credit for the way this team has played. They’ll face Tennessee State on Monday night to open the week, before playing West Virginia at home on Jan. 3.

The Sooners have navigated their way through a brutal non-conference schedule nicely this season. The team is now ranked No. 18 in the country and was able to defeat Weber State last week by 34 points. Oklahoma will battle Baylor to begin conference play on Jan. 3, after playing George Mason on Dec. 31.

Following their close victory over Southern on Dec. 22, Baylor is now on a five-game winning streak. It will play Norfolk State on Dec. 30, and then will travel to Oklahoma, which should be a great battle of evenly matched squads. The Bears are also currently second in the conference in scoring defense.

4. West Virginia (11-1) [Previous Rank: 4]

The Mountaineers have been steady throughout the non-conference portion of their schedule. The team is now ranked No. 17 and easily beat Wofford last week by 33 points. West Virginia will open conference play against TCU and Texas Tech starting on Jan. 3, but it can’t overlook a decent Virginia Tech squad, who it will battle on Dec. 30.

3. Kansas (9-2) [Previous Rank: 1]

For the past two weeks, Kansas had been in the No. 1 spot of these power rankings. However, a very surprising 77-52 loss to Temple drops the Jayhawks two spots this week. Bill Self’s squad will look to rebound against Kent State and UNLV in Week 8, before opening conference play on Jan. 7 against Baylor.

The Longhorns were also victims of a devastating defeat last week, which came against Stanford. However, Texas’ loss was a close contest throughout and came in overtime. Therefore, they hold onto their No. 2 spot ahead of Kansas. Rick Barnes’ team opened Week 8 with a victory over Rice on Monday afternoon and will begin conference play against Texas Tech on Jan. 3.

The new No. 1 team in these Big 12 power rankings, for the first time, is Iowa State. The No. 9 Cyclones move up two spots due to Texas and Kansas both losing in Week 8, as well as their overall consistency. They were idle in Week 7, but will play against Mississippi Valley State and South Carolina coming up this week. Fred Hoiberg’s team boasts the best offense in the conference, ranking first in scoring, assists and field goal percentage.
