Providence vs. Villanova: Game Preview, Prediction

Of the top teams in all of college basketball, perhaps the least talked about seems to be the Villanova Wildcats. At 25-2, the Wildcats have a legitimate opportunity to finish the season with a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. This could be crucial since the Kentucky Wildcats, Duke Blue Devils and Virginia Cavaliers will likely be three of the other No. 1 seeds.

In order to get that seed, however, Villanova must avoid losing down the stretch despite playing in arguably the most all-around difficult conference in college basketball, the Big East. Next up, the Wildcats will face the newly ranked Providence Friars, who play at The Pavilion on Tuesday, Feb. 24, at 7 p.m. ET on Fox Sports 1.

The Friars slide into the top 25 after winning back-to-back games. These two wins snapped a two-game losing streak and, more importantly, made sure that Providence’s season didn’t begin to head in a downward spiral. The Friars will want to get a win over a solid team like Villanova before the season ends, because, next to away wins against the Butler Bulldogs and Georgetown Hoyas, Providence has struggled a bit against the weaker conference teams.

I like Providence; they’re a good team with a lot of talent and an elite scorer in LaDontae Henton. Unfortunately, I don’t see a scenario in which this team can upset Villanova at home where Nova has lost no games this season. I give this one to the Wildcats in a highly contested game between two great teams.

Prediction: Villanova 68, Providence 60
