Big Ten Power Rankings: Week 16

Wisconsin

The conference's battle for the No. 2 spot is heating up as the season in winding down. I say No. 2 instead of No. 1 because the Wisconsin Badgers have basically mastered the art of domination of the Big Ten.

Let's take a look at the week 16 power rankings for the Big Ten.

14. Rutgers Scarlet Knights (10-18, 2-13); Last week: 14

Rutgers remains in the basement of the conference because of a lack of wins. The Scarlet Knights have now lost 11 games straight since taking down the mighty Wisconsin Badgers.

This week: at Purdue

13. Penn State Nittany Lions (15-13, 3-12); Last week: 12

Penn State

Penn State has gone from possible tournament team to unlikely NIT team in a matter of a couple of months. The Nittany Lions have lost six of seven games and since conference play began, Penn State has been just awful.

This week: vs. Iowa

12. Northwestern Wildcats (13-14, 4-10); Last week: 13

12. Northwestern Wildcats (13-14, 4-10); Last week: 13

Northwestern had a very successful week 16 showing as the Wildcats won both of their games, even taking down Minnesota on the road in unlikely fashion. The Wildcats have now won three straight games.

This week: vs. Indiana, at Illinois

11. Nebraska Cornhuskers (13-14, 5-10); Last week: 11

Nebraska

11. Nebraska Cornhuskers (13-14, 5-10); Last week: 11

Nebraska

Nebraska hasn't done quite enough this season to even be considered for an NCAA Tournament bid. The Cornhuskers were ranked at the beginning of the year, but have since fallen below .500 and have lost seven of their last eight games.

This week: at Ohio State

10. Minnesota Golden Gophers (16-12, 5-10); Last week: 9

Minnesota

10. Minnesota Golden Gophers (16-12, 5-10); Last week: 9

Minnesota

Minnesota is another disappointing team in the conference -- like many other squads. The Golden Gophers are a talented, young team, but three straight losses have marred a possible tourney bid.

This week: at Michigan State

9. Michigan Wolverines (14-13, 7-8); Last week: 10

Michigan

9. Michigan Wolverines (14-13, 7-8); Last week: 10

Michigan
Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

Michigan may have moved up to No. 9 in the power rankings, but the Wolverines likely won't be making the NCAA Tournament any time soon. Michigan has had a bit of an off-year filled with many injuries.

This week: at No. 14 Maryland

8. Illinois Fighting Illini (17-10, 7-7); Last week: 7

Illinois

8. Illinois Fighting Illini (17-10, 7-7); Last week: 7

Illinois
Mike Granse-USA TODAY Sports

Illinois lost a tough home game to a red-hot Michigan State team in week 15, but the Illini are still one of the conference's premier teams.

This week: at Iowa, vs. Northwestern

7. Indiana Hoosiers (19-9, 9-6); Last week: 6

Indiana
Jim O'Connor-USA TODAY Sports

7. Indiana Hoosiers (19-9, 9-6); Last week: 6

Indiana
Jim O'Connor-USA TODAY Sports

Indiana has fallen off a bit in recent weeks, going 4-5 since January 22. This team could be something special with the solid pieces it has in place, but the Hoosiers need to put it all together.

This week: at Northwestern

6. Iowa Hawkeyes (17-10, 8-6); Last week: 8

Iowa
Bruce Thorson-USA TODAY Sports

6. Iowa Hawkeyes (17-10, 8-6); Last week: 8

Iowa
Bruce Thorson-USA TODAY Sports

Iowa followed up an extremely poor week with two losses with a very impressive one with two blowout wins in week 15. Iowa won both of its games by a combined 62 points -- now that's quite a feat.

This week: vs. Illinois, at Penn State

5. Ohio State Buckeyes (19-8, 8-6); Last week: 5

5. Ohio State Buckeyes (19-8, 8-6); Last week: 5

Ohio State
Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

Ohio State has now lost two consecutive games to top rivals in the past two weeks, but its place in my power rankings remains unchanged because of the lack of solid play of the teams below it.

This week: vs. Nebraska, vs. Purdue

4. Purdue Boilermakers (18-9, 10-4); Last week: 3

Purdue

4. Purdue Boilermakers (18-9, 10-4); Last week: 3

Purdue

This team has easily been the conference's biggest surprise this season, winning seven of its last eight games and placing itself in talks to get into the Big Dance.

This week: vs. Rutgers, at Ohio State

3. Michigan State Spartans (19-8, 10-4); Last week: 4

Michigan State

3. Michigan State Spartans (19-8, 10-4); Last week: 4

Michigan State
Mike Granse-USA TODAY Sports

Michigan State has taken off in recent weeks, jumping from about No. 9 in the conference all the way to No. 3 in my power rankings. The Spartans have gone from on the bubble to a top-eight seed in the NCAA Tournament -- according to ESPN's Joe Lunardi.

This week: vs. Minnesota, at No. 5 Wisconsin

2. Maryland Terrapins (22-5, 10-4); Last week: 2

Maryland
Mitch Stringer-USA TODAY Sports

2. Maryland Terrapins (22-5, 10-4); Last week: 2

Maryland
Mitch Stringer-USA TODAY Sports

Maryland is one of two Big Ten teams that are ranked in the Top 25 in the nation. The Terrapins have been consistent all season long and I don't think there is any doubt that the Terrapins will be a top-five seed come tournament time.

This week: vs. No. 5 Wisconsin, vs. Michigan

1. Wisconsin Badgers (25-2, 13-1); Last week: 1

Wisconsin
Matthew O'Haren-USA TODAY Sports

1. Wisconsin Badgers (25-2, 13-1); Last week: 1

Wisconsin

Wisconsin will not be removed from this spot unless it loses the remainder of its games -- and even then the Badgers will likely be No. 1 in the power rankings.

This week: at No. 14 Maryland, vs. Michigan State
