Matchup: Texas Longhorns (20-12) vs. Iowa State Cyclones (22-8)

I am in a bit of a pickle here. I have been saying all along that the Longhorns would make the dance (they really need this win), but I have also said that the Cyclones would win the Big 12 tournament. With that in mind, it would only be right if the two met up this early in the Big 12 tourney. Thanks a lot, college basketball.

That aside, Texas had a must-win game against the Texas Tech Red Raiders in its first contest of the tournament. It, of course, came out on top. A win against the Cyclones isn’t a must, but a loss could mean bad news for the Longhorns.

What to Watch For

Texas has the talent, but the talent actually showing up is the real question. Isaiah Taylor had 12 points and seven assists against the Red Raiders. Cameron Ridley had 14 points and eight boards. Those two have to have similar performances against the Cyclones.

Georges Niang does so much for his team. If Iowa State does anything in the dance this year, a big part of that will be because of Niang. Just so people are aware, this team does have six players who are averaging 10 or more points per game.

Prediction

I’m torn. If Texas actually plays like it is capable of playing, it can easily come away with the victory.

It may be very hard to beat a team three times in one season, but Iowa State will achieve that feat against the Longhorns. Win or lose, Texas has to be competitive in this one. If it is blown out, the tournament committee will not be impressed one bit.

Texas 72, Iowa State 75
