Record: 21-10 (12-6 Big East)
South Region – Seed: 4
RPI: 25
BPI: 21
Conference: Big East
How They Qualified: At-large berth
Despite coming up short in the Big East Tournament, the Georgetown Hoyas are heading to the Big Dance for the first time in two years after a solid 21-10 season. The Big East isn’t as prestigious as it used to be, but the Hoyas remain one of the premier teams in the conference.
John Thompson III has a solid team on his hands and it could be one that pulls some upsets out in the coming weeks. Junior guard D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera might be the leader of this squad as he is the top scorer and passer. The Hoyas won six of eight games to finish the year and that hot streak is a main reason as to why they were ranked throughout the latter stretches of the campaign.
What You Need to Know:
Leading Scorer: D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera (16.2 ppg)
Leading Rebounder: Joshua Smith (5.9 rpg)
Leading Passer: D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera (3.1 apg)
Bad Losses: none
Good Wins: vs. Indiana, vs. Butler (twice), vs. Villanova
Although his overall field goal percentage is down three percent from a season ago, Smith-Rivera has seen his three-point rate hovering around 40 percent all year long and his assist-to-turnover ration is a solid 2-1. This team will go as far as he takes it and, with the help of senior center Joshua Smith who averages 11.1 points and 5.9 rebounds per game, that could be very far.
Georgetown has an impressive resume seeing as it has four good wins as well as no bad losses on the year. Beating a team that ended up as a No. 1 seed like Villanova is impressive in itself and Smith-Rivera has carried this team more often than not.
Can the junior guard carry this team to a Final Four for the first time since 2006-07?
