It’s difficult to imagine what Syracuse basketball would be like without head coach Jim Boeheim, but it looks like college basketball fans will only get to see the Hall of Fame head coach for three more seasons.

Shortly after the news broke regarding Daryl Gross no longer being the athletic director, it was announced that Boeheim would retire in three years as head coach of Syracuse–which may seem hard to believe considering Boeheim has been associated with the University since 1962 when he was a freshman. Despite the recent punishments from the NCAA, it’s difficult to put into words what Boeheim has meant to the Syracuse community over the last 39 years and finding his replacement will be unimaginable (even though it seems like Mike Hopkins will be next in line).

This season aside, it’s safe to say Syracuse has been somewhat of a powerhouse in the college basketball world under Boeheim as he’s led the Orange to four appearances in the Final Four to go along with a National Championship in 2003 with Carmelo Anthony. While most college basketball fans now have a different image of Boeheim following the NCAA’s harsh punishments (he will be suspended for nine games next season as part of the punishment along with the loss of scholarships over the next three seasons), you can’t deny all of the success the head coach has brought to the table over the last 39 years.

Between Gross being out along with Boeheim’s, it’s crazy to see all of the attention Syracuse has been receiving over the last couple of weeks for all of the wrong reasons and it will be interesting to see what the next three years will bring as Boeheim begins his farewell tour. On the bright side, at least the news of Boeheim retiring in three seasons means the head coach plans on helping turn things back around at Syracuse after the latest scandal so the team will be in good hands when retirement comes.
