Notre Dame Needs To Relax, Rely On Experience In 2015 NCAA Tournament

Notre Dame Fighting Irish survive against Northeastern Huskies

Relax, let Jerian Grant do his thing, and once you finally calm down, you’ll fly through the Big Dance just like you flew through the ACC tournament. This advice is imperative for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to heed — if the Irish are to survive.

The Northeastern Huskies gave the Irish a much-needed scare in the NCAA tournament’s second round. Thankfully for Notre Dame, Northeastern couldn’t even muster a shot on net in the Huskies second-to-last possession. Notre Dame escaped with a 69-65 victory Thursday afternoon, but the Irish won’t get bailed out so ineptly on Saturday.

Notre Dame must figure out how to loosen the self-inflicted choke-hold. Northeastern was rugged and hit a few NBA-range threes, but Notre Dame has the position-to-position talent to run Northeastern’s entire roster out of the building. Playing to the final possession says more than we need to know.

Head coach Mike Brey ostensibly contributed — dressing more casual than usual, going without the tie, suiting-up to only the second button — yet Notre Dame still played as if oxygen was a rare commodity.

The Irish have the talent, and being one of the eldest teams in Division I basketball, they also have the experience. You’d figure tenure would serve Notre Dame well for the predictable shock of the tourney, but right now, the Irish look shaky and unsure.

Again, go with what got you there. Go to Grant, allow the senior guard to actuate the offense, and lead you on the floor. Brey has the right idea and is trying to apply the correct direction, but until Notre Dame executes this ideology we won’t see anything resembling the Irish rampage from the ACC tournament.
