The St. John’s Red Storm are not messing around. Just days after the program parted ways with former head coach Steve Lavin, the Red Storm have landed Chris Mullin.

Although Mullin clearly saw a ton of success while playing for the Red Storm, he has never been a head coach, making this an interesting move.

However, if Mullin can get Rysheed Jordan and Chris Obekpa to hang around for another year, that would be a great start — to say the least. St. John’s is losing a ton of talent over the offseason (most notably leading scorer D’Angelo Harrison), and it isn’t necessarily coming off the best season in school history.

The Red Storm were great at times and bad at times in 2014-15, but they did end up making the 2015 NCAA tournament regardless.

The team is clearly headed in a different direction, and hopefully new head coach Mullin will be able to lead the Red Storm to victory on Day 1.

For what it’s worth, Lavin left the program in much better shape than when he arrived, so that should only help Mullin succeed right away.

St. John’s wanted Mullin from the start, and it landed its man. Time to see how that one plays out.
