After being named the SEC Player of the Year, there was not much left for Bobby Portis to accomplish with the Arkansas Razorbacks. And with his stock at what might be an all-time high, Portis has made the decision to enter the NBA Draft.

The 6-11 sophomore led Arkansas in scoring, averaging 17.5 points per game, and in rebounding, averaging 8.9 points per contest. He scored in double figures in all but two of the Hogs’ games this season.

Arkansas made the NCAA Tournament and won its first round game, beating Wofford 56-53. Portis had 15 points and 13 rebounds as the Razorbacks avoided the upset.

However, Arkansas lost its second round game to the North Carolina Tar Heels, 87-78, despite 18 points and 14 boards from Portis.

Portis has an NBA body, long, lean and athletic, and that should allow him to excel in the league. He should be able to put on some weight, which would allow him to be even more effective near the rim. He’s already in the process of developing his mid-range game, which could make him an even bigger scoring threat as a power forward in the league.

During his two years in Fayetteville, Arkansas went 49-21. In the process, the Hogs moved from a middle of the pack SEC team to a contender for the conference title. And Portis, along with teammate Michael Qualls, deserve the majority of the credit for making that happen.

But now, it’s time for the next challenge in Portis’ career, and that will be challenging the best players in the world beginning next season.
