The Missouri Tigers suffered through a miserable season in 2014-15. Missouri went 9-23 overall, including a 3-15 mark in SEC play.

First-year coach Kim Anderson saw his team lose 13 games in a row at one point during the campaign. The Tigers were offensively challenged last season, finishing 321st in the country in scoring offense (60.5 points per game) and 307th nationally in field goal percentage (40.3 percent).

One of the few bright spots on last season’s Missouri team was forward Johnathan Williams III, who averaged a team-best 11.9 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. During his sophomore season, Williams showed signs of becoming Mizzou’s go-to guy while playing the second-most minutes on the team.

But on Sunday, Williams announced that he was leaving the Missouri program and transferring to Gonzaga. This is obviously a big blow to Anderson and his program as they try to climb out of the cellar in the SEC. Williams was a Top 50 recruit when he came out of Memphis as a high school senior. Losing a player like that at Missouri is quite a blow.

The future doesn’t appear to be very bright for this program right now. One guy does not make a team, but losing Williams, and not having a suitable replacement, will challenge the Tigers next season.

Anderson does not have a great recruiting class coming in, although he does have a couple of players who will be called upon right away. Mizzou’s class is ranked 53rd nationally by 24/7 Sports. Point guard K.J. Walton should see significant action next season, as will junior college transfers Martavian Payne and Russell Woods.

Missouri has a long way to go to compete in the SEC, and that road got a little longer with the transfer of Williams.
