Georgia Tech used to float around the middle of the ACC, but last season they fell to the bottom half of the conference. They have some new pieces that will help them improve next season, but they need to do five things this summer in order for that to happen.

Rebounding was one of the main traits that kept the Yellow Jackets in games last season. Their shooting was abysmal from everywhere on the court. If it wasn’t for their elite offensive rebounding, Georgia Tech may have finished dead last in the ACC. Don’t expect another season shooting 40 percent from the field, but the dominance on the backboard should still be a staple of the program.

It’s pretty hard to compete in the ACC shooting 27 percent from three-point range. Hopefully Georgia Tech can solve some of that problem with Virginia Tech transfer Adam smith, who was one of the top three-point shooters in the conference last season. Aside from him, Quinton Stephens and Marcus Georges-Hunt will have to improve on their poor shooting seasons. They don’t have enough talent to win with inside scoring alone.

3. Improve Tadric Jackson’s Decision Making

Jackson is not shy about putting up shots. Last year he probably should have been after shooting 27 percent from the field. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound guard has star potential as a go-to scorer. This summer he needs to learn how to find better shots in the offense so his numbers reflect his ability. If he can make the adjustment, he could emerge as one of the top sophomores in the conference.

Mitchell was the leading rebounder in only 22 minutes. He’s close to 270 pounds and relatively out of shape right now. If he could lose some weight, he may be able to play closer to 30 minutes per game. With that many minutes, Mitchell could average around 10 rebounds for a team that relies on second-chance points. Georgia Tech’s staff has stressed conditioning over the past few seasons, so hopefully he takes some steps in the right direction.

Virginia Tech transfer Adam Smith and Arkansas-Little Rock transfer James White will be key contributors for the Yellow Jackets. Smith is a sensational shooter who shot 42 percent from three last year. White averaged 11.9 points, 6.6 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game. Both players are natives of Georgia, making the transition easier. Georgia Tech needs to welcome these players if they want to finish in the top half of the conference.
