Michigan Basketball: Early 2015-16 Outlook

The Michigan Wolverines started off the 2014-15 college basketball season with high expectations. Not only were the Wolverines expected to go to the 2015 NCAA Tournament, but they were expected to contend for the Big 10 title as well. However, injuries and a horrible early season stretch that saw them lose to the New Jersey Institute of Technology led to this team finishing at .500 overall with a losing record in conference play.

Coming into the 2015-16 season, the hype surrounding the program has cooled. Michigan have taken a back seat in national attention to teams such as the Indiana Hoosiers, Maryland Terrapins and Michigan State Spartans and will likely enter the season far from a favorite to finish in the top five of the Big 10.

However, Michigan looks primed to be one of the better teams in the conference. Caris LeVert and Derrick Walton Jr. should be fully healed and last season’s go-to player Zak Irvin should improve. Nine players who saw significant time for the Wolverines on the court will return. Coupled with the incoming recruits and redshirt freshmen, Michigan could easily boast the deepest roster in the Big 10 next to conference favorites Maryland.

More good news for the Wolverines is that several of the better teams from last season will take a step back. The Wisconsin Badgers lose their biggest stars, Michigan State doesn’t seem to get things going until the start of the tournament and the Ohio State Buckeyes lose the three players who played over 30 minutes per game last season.

No matter who is favored to win the Big 10 coming into the season (likely Maryland), Michigan should enter this season as one of the dark horses to win the conference and could be a sneaky pick in the 2016 NCAA Tournament.
