After a year of adjustments, Buzz Williams is going to push his team to run into the upper half of the ACC. There is plenty of talent returning for a team that wasn’t great last year. Virginia Tech can be a known presence in the conference if they improve these parts of their personnel.

Pierce is going to be the best post presence on a team that already lacks in size. He’s aggressive when he goes after offensive rebounds, but he looked lazy on the defensive glass last year. At 7-foot, Pierce needs to be the one cleaning up the majority of the missed shots. His defensive rebounding will be what keeps the Hokies in games.

Williams came in last year with some good young players who are still trying to find their identity. He brought in some transfers and has another solid recruiting class, so Williams should have the group’s full attention. His competitive fire is what made him so popular at Marquette. If Virginia Tech can feed off that fire, they can make some noise.

Allen sat out last season due to transfer rules after coming over from Maryland. He averaged 13.4 points on 38 percent shooting from three in his sophomore season. With two years of experience left, Allen will be a great influence for the young players who haven’t played in big games. His playmaking ability impressed Buzz Williams enough to snatch him from a better Maryland team.

There aren’t any established post players on the roster. With Allen playing point, a combination of Ahmed Hill, Justin Bibbs and Jalen Hudson would be the best option. At 220 pounds, Bibbs is physical enough to contain most fours, while Hudson and Hill are both 6-foot-5 and capable of guarding either wing spot. They would also be able to get out and run a little more with a quicker lineup with Satchel Pierce playing center.

Bibbs is full of ability at 6-foot-5, 220 pounds. As a freshman, he scored 11.4 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. He can shoot the three or use his powerful body to attack the rim. The offensive dynamic will be different with Seth Allen playing lead guard, but Bibbs is the real star of the team. He has the chance to be a terror in the ACC if he gets enough touches.
