NC State Gets Much-Needed Wing Help With Commitment Of Maverick Rowan

Maverick Rowan verbally committed to the NC State Wolfpack to join the team for the 2015-2016 season. He is going to be one of the top wing players from the start, and should help push the Wolfpack to another level.

Rowan reclassified from the 2016 class so he could start playing this season. NC State lost Ralston Turner and Trevor Lacey, but failed to gain any significant improvements at the wing positions. West Virginia transfer Terry Henderson can only play guard, so Caleb Martin and Cody Martin were the only legitimate contributors at small forward. Insert Rowan, a pure scorer with a silky three-point stroke, and the Wolfpack finally have some depth.

Now Mark Gottfried will have some options when it comes to his rotation. Rowan can play shooting guard or small forward, and his 6-foot-6 frame allows him to rise up over most wing players. Even though (Caleb) Martin will probably start, Rowan has more natural scoring instincts. His scoring and his ball-handling will take pressure off of Anthony Barber and Henderson.

While the Martin twins are capable of shooting the three, they aren’t nearly as deadly behind the arc as Rowan. He is going to add a different dimension, and could be a starter by the time the season ends. He still needs to work on his defense, but that will come with time. What he does now is get buckets, and that is something that the Wolfpack need the most from that wing position next year.

Rowan is a perfect match for NC State, and his skill set fits in well with the current personnel of the Wolfpack. He’s going to be a big-time player in the ACC as he develops over the years.
