The Texas Longhorns finally parted ways with longtime head coach Rick Barnes. With his departure, a new era of college basketball begins in Austin, and the future looks extremely bright. Here are five reasons why Texas fans should be excited heading into the 2015-16 college basketball season.

In the biggest offseason coaching move, Smart was finally able to be pried away from the VCU Rams at the end of last season. Smart was fantastic in his time with the Rams and should do great things at Texas.

Myles Turner and Jonathan Holmes were the only key losses from last season, meaning that Texas boasts one of the most experienced squads in the country. Couple that with the potential of their talent, and there is a perfect storm for a dark horse Big 12 contender in Austin this season.

Taylor would have likely been selected somewhere in the 2015 NBA Draft, but he decided to return after leading the Longhorns in scoring in 2014-15. His faith in the success of this team in 2015-16 is a huge positive for Texas moving forward.

If Texas finishes under .500 this season, Shaka Smart will not be fired. This talented team has absolutely nothing to lose, and with several players slated to be future NBA Draft selections, anyone could step up and become a star.

Texas has been nothing but disappointing as of late, but could become absolutely anything in the future. Will they continue to struggle? They might. Will they win it all? They might. We just don’t know, and that is enough to make the Longhorns one of the most exciting teams in college basketball heading into 2015-16.
