TV Schedule: Sunday, Jan. 3, 7:30 p.m. ET, PAC12

Stadium: Haas Pavilion

Both the Utah Utes and California Golden Bears were expected to make some noise in college basketball this season, and perhaps compete for a Pac-12 title as well.

Entering this contest, both squads hold a record of 11-3. Utah brings a one-game losing streak with it while Cal is riding a two-game winning streak. The Golden Bears also hold a 1-0 record in conference play thanks to a victory over the Colorado Buffaloes. Meanwhile, the Utes are 0-1 thanks to a loss against the Stanford Cardinal.

Utah’s other losses have come against the Miami Hurricanes and Wichita State Shockers. They do have a monster notable win over the Duke Blue Devils, though. Cal’s losses have come against the San Diego State Aztecs, Richmond Spiders and Virginia Cavaliers.

If the Golden Bears plan on moving to 2-0 in conference play, they have to find a way to contain Jakob Poeltl. The big man is averaging 17.6 points and 9.2 rebounds per game. Of course, players like Tyrone Wallace and Jaylen Brown should have no problem keeping California in this game.

If California does capture the victory, a top 25 ranking could follow, and the rest of the conference better take note (I’m talking to you, Arizona).

Nonetheless, life on the road in college hoops can be very tough, and Utah is getting a full dose of that right now.

PREDICTION: Utes 68, Golden Bears 72
