BYU vs. Gonzaga College Basketball Preview, TV Schedule, Prediction

By Trevor Lowry

TV Schedule: Thursday, Jan. 14, 9:00 p.m. ET, ESPN2

Stadium: McCarthey Athletic Center

The Gonzaga Bulldogs might have gotten off to a shaky start, and have fallen under the radar as a result, but they are still kings of the WCC. Next up, said kings will take on the BYU Cougars.

BYU enters this contest with a 12-5 record. They are also entering with a three-game winning streak and sit at 3-1 in the WCC. You could say the Bulldogs enter with a little more momentum. They have now won seven games in a row and are 5-0 in conference play — because Gonzaga basketball.

BYU brings some scoring punch to the table. It has four guys who are putting up double figures in the scoring department, and two players are putting up 15+ points per contest. Overall, the Cougars are averaging 84.8 PPG.

Gonzaga isn’t too shabby in the scoring department either, as it is averaging 80.4 PPG. The Bulldogs might only have three guys who are averaging double figures in scoring, but two of those players are averaging 18+. One of those players is Kyle Wiltjer, who just so happens to be one of the best players in the sport — you may have heard.

Let’s make this as simple as can be: Gonzaga entered the season as a serious title contender, and many people thought this would be the year that the Bulldogs made a run to the Final Four. BYU, on the other hand, did not receive as much hype. I am still buying the Bulldogs as serious title contenders, and there is no reason why they should lose this battle.

PREDICTION: Cougars 77, Bulldogs 84
