Ohio State vs. Maryland College Basketball Preview, TV Schedule, Prediction

By Trevor Lowry

TV Schedule: Saturday, Jan. 16, 12:00 p.m. ET, ESPN2

Stadium: XFINITY Center

The Ohio State Buckeyes will take on the Maryland Terrapins next — because the Big Ten is awesome like that.

The Buckeyes enter with a 12-6 record while the Terrapins enter with a 15-2 record, and they also have the No. 3 ranking in the country going for them. That said, Maryland is coming off of its second loss of 2015-16, a loss that came to the Michigan Wolverines. That just proves one key thing: Life on the road in college hoops can be brutal to even the best teams in the nation.

The Buckeyes have gotten off to a 4-1 start in conference play, which is exactly what they needed. You know, if they plan on doing what they usually do every year — make the NCAA tournament. Meanwhile, the Terps are also sitting at 4-1 in Big Ten play. However, there is no question that this squad belongs in the Big Dance (hence that No. 3 ranking we talked about earlier).

Needless to say, Ohio State does not have a lethal offense. Sure, four players are averaging double figures in the scoring department, but the team is averaging 72.3 points per game overall. Luckily, the Buckeyes’ defense is rather stingy, as it is only giving up 64.6 PPG.

Maryland comes in averaging 77.8 PPG, and it has a ton of scorers. Melo Trimble alone could lead this team to victory. This bunch is also only allowing 63.9 PPG.

College basketball happens. After all, Maryland lost its last game to Michigan. However, don’t expect lighting to strike twice.

PREDICTION: Buckeyes 65, Terrapins 75
