North Carolina Basketball Coach Roy Williams Hasn't Lost Magic Recruiting Touch

By Geoffrey Knox

Here’s what’s certain. You can never open your mouth and say Roy Williams can’t recruit. Did you see what this dude did? Have you read some of the names? Did you take the time to pull up some video of some of these guys? Let’s just state the obvious. The North Carolina Tar Heels are, arguably, the deepest roster in the country. They seem to have a rotation that’s about nine guys deep. That isn’t always the case, but it definitely feels that way.

When you look at what the ACC has done in recruiting, it could seem like they’ve decided to unofficially become some sort of NBA farm system. This year is no different, and once again, the Heels have landed a top 10 recruiting class. Tony Bradley and Seventh Woods are among the top 50 players in the country. Bradley is considered the fourth-best center in the country and the fourth-best player from the state of Florida regardless of position. Woods is a combo guard and considered the best player the state of South Carolina produced this year. Being from Columbia, it makes you wonder how the South Carolina Gamecocks let this guy get out of the state, but they did. Both will be joined at the end of the year by Brandon Robinson, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard from Georgia.

The current version of the Heels made many see this as a team that should end up cutting the nets down in March; and even though there were some hiccups early, Williams seems to have righted the ship. If the road to the Final Four doesn’t include a bus full of guys in light blue there may be more to talk about, but so far, there’s no reason to believe that would be accurate. The only thing you may be able to suggest to rival recruiters is the possibility of using the angle that the Heels are so stocked you may want to consider going to another school for more playing time. Other than that, there isn’t much to say. Maybe coaches should call Roy, because whatever he’s saying, it’s working.
