Virginia vs. Pittsburgh College Basketball Preview, TV Schedule, Prediction

By Trevor Lowry

TV Schedule: Saturday, Feb. 6, 12:00 p.m. ET, ESPN3

Stadium: Petersen Events Center

The Virginia Cavaliers and Pittsburgh Panthers are both very much alive in the ACC race, and the two will take the court against one another next.

That said, both squads have three losses in conference play, and the North Carolina Tar Heels only have one. Translation: A fourth loss, which will be the destiny for one of these two teams on Saturday, will be very devastating when it comes to competing for that ACC title.

Virginia is riding quite the momentum train into this clash, as it has won its last five games in a row. Pittsburgh has a whopping one-game winning steak going for it, and it certainly hasn’t been the hottest team in college hoops as of late.

Here’s something that might shock you: The Cavs have just eight regular season games left … which means March Madness is literally right around the corner, lurking its beautiful head. That said, the Panthers still have nine contests left before they can go into postseason mode.

Now let’s talk some stats: Virginia is one of the most stingy teams in the country when it comes to allowing opposing teams to score, as it is giving up just 60.5 points per game. Pittsburgh is allowing 66.4 PPG — just for the record.

The Panthers certainly have the talent to knock off Virginia, and another signature win would do them wonders when it comes to seeding for the Big Dance. However, the Cavs entered the season as one of the best teams in the college basketball land, and they now seem to be hitting their stride.

The rest of the ACC, you have been warned.

PREDICTION: Cavaliers 71, Panthers 59
