5 Bold Predictions For 2016 SEC Basketball Tournament

The 2015-16 college basketball season did not go to plan for several SEC teams, but that can all be fixed with an extended run in the SEC tournament. History has proven anything can happen, as the winners of the SEC regular season title have only won the conference tournament four out of the last 11 years. Here are five bold predictions for the upcoming 2016 SEC tournament.

5. No. 12 Tennessee vs. No. 13 Auburn Goes Down To The Wire

Tennessee and Auburn are both teams that have pulled off major upsets over SEC regular season title winners Kentucky this season, but have struggled to win games against average opponents. Two of the best coaches in college basketball go head to head in this one, as Rick Barnes and Bruce Pearl face off. It might not be the marquee ticket in this tournament, but it will be one of the most fun games to watch.

4. Mississippi State Upsets South Carolina

In what will be arguably the biggest tournament upset from a big-name conference, the No. 3 seeded Gamecocks will fall to the No. 11 seeded Bulldogs. Mississippi State has beaten South Carolina once this season, and I think this team full of talented seniors pulls it together for one last tournament run. Oh, and do not forget the new head coach, Ben Howland, knows how to win a tournament game or two.

3. LSU Continues To Disappoint

The LSU Tigers are an extremely talented team that has underperformed all season long; do not expect that to change in the SEC tournament. With Vanderbilt being their likely opponent, the Vandy offense should rip them to shreds and send Ben Simmons and Co. to the NIT.

2. Florida Upsets Texas A&M

Texas A&M might be the most consistent team in the SEC, but Mike White has done a highly underrated job in his first season at Florida. The talent is there to potentially win the NIT, something this moderately young team could use heading into next season. But don’t worry, Aggies fans; Texas A&M is practically a lock for the Sweet 16.

1. Vanderbilt Wins It Over Kentucky

Did you see what Vanderbilt did to Kentucky in Nashville? The Commodores might not show up to play against lesser opposition, but they show up when it counts. Vanderbilt gets the upset victory over the Wildcats to win the SEC tournament, as road and neutral court struggles continue to hinder Kentucky.
