It seemed like it was just yesterday when it began, but the regular season in NCAA basketball has come to an end and standout guard Malcolm Brogdon of the Virginia Cavaliers is the ACC player of the year. Many had the award going to either Brogdon or to Brice Johnson of the North Carolina Tar Heels, but of that same group many gave a slight nod to Brogdon.
He also joins the ACC All-Conference first team as a unanimous selection and the All-Conference defensive team. If that isn’t enough, he takes home the ACC defensive player of the year award as well. Brogdon averaged about 34 minutes of playing time as a senior and showed no signs of slowing down as the regular season closed out. He was a fixture in the Cavaliers’ game plan all year and stepped up when necessary in late game action, including an impressive stretch in which he knocked down 42 straight from the stripe.
Brogdon is one of the conference’s biggest threats from deep after he connected on 41 percent of his attempts and enters postseason play averaging 18 points a game, 4 rebounds and almost 3 assists. He reached a season high 28-point output on three separate occasions including when he lifted Virginia over the Miami Hurricanes in an important late-season road win. His contribution over the last four years have helped restore Virginia as one of the elite programs in the conference. Now, they look to take the next step and stay there consistently. Next year, they’ll have to begin that task without their star.
