2016 NCAA Tournament Preview: No. 3 Miami vs. No. 14 Buffalo

By Chipper Murphy

In a season without a clear title favorite, the Miami Hurricanes have remained in the picture throughout. With impressive wins over the Utah Runnin’ Utes, Virginia Cavaliers and Duke Blue Devils, the Hurricanes look like a legitimate title contender. Buffalo doesn’t stand a chance.

Hurricanes head coach Jim Larranaga is one of the best in the country. His team has another great defense (fourth in the ACC in the scoring of opponents), with great guard play led by seniors Sheldon McClellan and Angel Rodriguez.

McClellan leads Miami in scoring (15.8 points) while shooting 50 percent from the field, 39.2 percent from 3-point range and 84.8 percent from the free-throw line. Rodriguez is the point guard and leader who took his team to huge victories over Duke (13 pts, 11 asts) and the Louisville Cardinals (17 pts, 7 asts).

All due respect to Buffalo, but they are 159th in offensive efficiency and 167th in defensive efficiency. The Bulls were only fourth in the MAC in scoring, 10th in three-point percentage (a huge asset for every upset bid), and last in turnovers committed. Going up against a Miami offense that ranks 17th in offensive efficiency, those numbers don’t inspire any confidence.

Miami plays so slow it would make Virginia jealous (314th in possessions per game) but they are remarkably effective as coach Larranaga has perfected the approach.

For the Bulls to pull off an upset here, Miami would have to lay a huge egg and the chances of this team doing that are slim to none. This will be a blowout.

Prediction: Miami 90, Buffalo 72
