2016 NCAA Tournament Preview: No. 5 Maryland vs. No. 12 South Dakota State

By Trevor Lowry

It’s amazing to think the Maryland Terrapins are a No. 5 seed. They entered the season by being one of the favorites to make a run to the Final Four, after all.

The Terrapins might be one of the most stacked teams in the field, but they find themselves in the infamous No. 12 vs. No. 5 matchup, a matchup that has seen many No. 5 seeds being upset in recent memory.

The South Dakota State Jackrabbits are riding the momentum train into this 2016 NCAA tournament clash, as they have won six games in a row. Meanwhile, Maryland has been dropping all kinds of games lately, which includes its last game in the Big Ten tourney.

What To Watch For

When it comes to Maryland, you might as well watch out for its entire starting five. That said, Melo Trimble and Diamond Stone get most of the headlines, as they should. In total, this talented squad has five players who are averaging 11+ points per game.

As for the Jackrabbits, they have three players who are putting up 14+ points per game.

Prediction

Although a No. 5 seed is pretty disappointing for the Terrapins, they remain one of the most talented teams in the field, and that is very hard to go against, especially when they are going up against a double-digit seed.

Let’s put it this way: No one should be surprised if Maryland makes a run to the Final Four.

If the Terps (and Trimble especially) flip the switch early and often in the dance, they very well could fly through the competition.

Maryland 78, South Dakota State 65
