2016 NCAA Tournament Preview: No. 6 Texas vs. No. 11 Northern Iowa

By Trevor Lowry

The winner between No. 6 Texas and No. 11 Northern Iowa could end up going very far in the 2016 NCAA tournament.

Why, one might ask?

Well, let’s take a look at some wins these two squads have racked up during the 2015-16 college basketball season.

Texas’ signature wins: North Carolina, Iowa State, West Virginia, Baylor, Oklahoma.

Northern Iowa’s signature wins: North Carolina, Iowa State, Wichita State.

Needless to say, these two teams are capable of taking down some of the best squads that this sport has to offer, and they will meet up right off the bat in this year’s Big Dance (thank you, tournament committee).

What To Watch For

The Panthers are led by Wes Washpun, a man who is averaging 14.3 points and 5.2 assists per game. In total, though, four players are averaging double figures in the scoring department, yet this team is averaging just 68 PPG. Northern Iowa is, however, only giving up 62.9 PPG (talking about being stingy).

Isaiah Taylor is the leading man for the Longhorns, as he is averaging 14.8 points and 4.9 assists per game. Like UNI, Texas’ strength is not putting the ball in the hoop in lethal fashion, as it is only averaging 71.3 PPG. The Longhorns are giving up just 68.1 PPG, though.

Prediction

Although this contest is being played between a No. 6 seed and No. 11 seed, you might as well have a coin handy.

Northern Iowa doesn’t reside in the Big 12, a conference that is filled with NCAA tournament teams, but it did knock off two very talented teams in non-conference play, and it has also won six games in a row. Heck, the Panthers were once 10-11 on the season, and they now enter the dance with a record of 22-12.

Of course, Shaka Smart is the head coach for the Longhorns, and his teams have been known to make some serious noise in the Big Dance.

This one should be interesting, but isn’t that what March Madness is all about?

Texas 63, Northern Iowa 65
