The 2016 NCAA tournament has been — in one word — insane. The madness will likely continue, because there is still plenty of basketball that needs to be played. You know, like the Sweet 16 and beyond.
Next up, the Virginia Cavaliers will take on the Iowa State Cyclones. Needless to say, this is a mega-showdown in every way.
Not only is Virginia a No. 1 seed and Iowa State a No. 4, but these squads entered the 2015-16 college basketball season with Final Four written all over them.
What To Watch For
Georges Niang is one of the best players in the country, and he has certainly been showing off his talents in the Big Dance so far. Here’s the proof: Niang has scored 28 points in back-to-back tournament games.
Malcolm Brogdon leads the scoring charge for the Cavaliers, but like Niang, he is not alone. That tends to be the case when you are the No. 1 (or No. 4) seed in the tourney.
Prediction
While the madness doesn’t usually stop until the tournament actually comes to a, well, stop, the Sweet 16 and beyond tends to be some of the best basketball of the season — because the matchups are dream scenarios for fans and the talent level typically goes up.
With that said, it is easy to come to this conclusion: This is by far the toughest matchup of the dance (so far) for both of these squads.
It will be Iowa State’s lethal offense going up against Virginia’s absolutely stingy defense. Translation: Something has to give.
