Stories Surrounding Dillon Brooks And Coach K Take Are Distracting

By Geoffrey Knox

Many sports fans and writers truly have nothing to talk about because the Duke Blue Devils were eliminated by the Oregon Ducks in the NCAA tournament. Almost everywhere you look, you read what may or may not have been said and whether it should have been said or not. It’s like the fallout of breakup in high school. This is the result of Dillon Brooks sinking one last shot at the end of their game as time was running out on Duke’s season, and the game had already been decided.

The story’s already been spun every possible way that you can do it. Brooks and Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski have been called names. Lip readers were asked to watch the conversation and give everyone a clear answer. Honestly, there are so many other things that are more important that can be talked about.

Sports and life work the same way. What’s considered offensive varies depending on who’s offended. It could be Jose Bautista flipping a bat after a home run, Brooks adding insult to injury with his last-second jumper or Coach K “lecturing” Brooks for doing so. Here’s the truth. Bautista meant the Texas Rangers no harm and was just excited after hitting the biggest home run of his life, Brooks didn’t intend to insult Duke Basketball and Coach K isn’t a crybaby because he offered a good basketball player advice in basketball decorum. The only people who are offended in most of these types of events are the losing teams and people who just don’t like the guys who came out on top.

What’s unfortunate is we’ve now been distracted from better stories. The Ducks advanced to the “Elite Eight” by beating one of the greatest programs in college basketball, the Blue Devils were undermanned and had no bench most of the year but exceeded expectations by getting this far and Coach K has more tournament wins than any other coach. Now, wouldn’t any of those stories make for a better read?
