Villanova Wildcats Look To Repeat History In 2016 Final Four

By Geoffrey Knox

In 1985, the world was rocked as the Villanova Wildcats upset the favored Georgetown Hoyas in the national championship game. This year’s version of a proud team from Philadelphia hopes to deliver the program its second national title. While it may not be as surprising as it was back then if it happens, it would still be a great story, wouldn’t it?

History has a way of repeating itself. Just like 1985, in order to win, the Wildcats are going to have to take their game to another level to pull off one of the two most important tournament runs of their entire existence. Of the four teams remaining, you could make successful arguments for why they have the best chance to win and also why they could be the underdogs if they faced any of the remaining teams.

The Oklahoma Sooners are the favorites in this contest, and it would be hard to argue against that. They met the Wildcats earlier in the year and won by 23. In fairness, the Wildcats struggled from the floor and only hit 13 percent of their three-point attempts. Then again, it’s not like Oklahoma got their best game from their best player either, as Buddy Hield was limited to 18 points.

Philadelphia needs a reason to celebrate. It may be a city that’s more interested in professional sports, but to say their teams have been disappointing would be an understatement. For that reason, as Philadelphia always does, they’ve rallied behind their own. The Wildcats may seem like a long-shot to many, but this city looks back to 1985 and knows anything is possible.
