2014 NCAA Tournament Preview: No. 3 Creighton vs No.14 UL-Lafayette

The Creighton Bluejays’ Doug McDermott dominated opponents all season long by averaging nearly 27 points per game and seven rebounds, but he’s not going to be satisfied until he can lead his team to a National Title, especially after falling to the Providence Friars in the Big East Championship game. Behind his scoring, Creighton secured a Big East regular season title as well as earned the No. 3 seed in the West region of the 2014 NCAA Tournament, where the Bluejays will face the UL-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns.

ULL, despite finishing third in the Sun Belt, defeated the No. 1 Georgia State Panthers and No.  2 Western Kentucky Hilltoppers en route to the Sun Belt Championship and an automatic berth in the 2014 NCAA Tournament. The Ragin’ Cajuns beat just one top 100 RPI team all season long, the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs, and just three in the top 150 RPI.

What to Watch For

Although ranking No. 13 in the country in scoring, ULL ranks No. 303 in points allowed. The only way anyone is going to defeat Creighton is to let McDermott score, but shut down everyone else. Expect ULL and Creighton to put on an offensive show that has the potential to get up into the low 90s as both teams are elite scoring offenses.

Prediction

ULL isn’t going to stand much of a chance against Creighton. The Bluejays are just far more talented, and the quality of the Ragin’ Cajuns’ opposition this season has been nowhere near the quality of Creighton. Expect a high scoring game in which McDermott finishes with 30+ points.

Creighton 87, ULL 70
