Break out the beers, bratwurst, jersey, footballs, marching bands and everything else that make college football the No. 1 sport in America. It’s gameday in South Bend.
Today’s season opener has been looked forward to more than any in at least the past five years. Notre Dame has plenty of question marks with an unproven defense, a new quarterback and Brian Kelly. If history means anything, Kelly should have a smooth opening day. Since 1935, only one Notre Dame coach failed to win his first game.
If the Irish do lose, that might not be the worst sign. The one coach who lost his Irish debut was Lou Holtz in a 24-23 heartbreaker to Michigan.
Leprechaun Legion is headed to the house that Rock built to take in the action first-hand, so the blog will be silent for the day. Check back in tomorrow to read reaction from Notre Dame’s season opener.
In the meantime, check out this video of Brian Kelly’s first Irish pep rally to get ready for the game. Kelly told students that his team would break tradition by becoming the first team not to run through the tunnel before warm-ups. Instead, they’ll be entering the field by walking straight through the Irish student section – should be fun to watch.
