Former Hawkeye running back Brandon Wegher has opted to transfer to the University of Oklahoma.
Wegher, a Sioux City Heelen product, was offered scholarships at Penn State, Auburn and Nebraska before chosing to go to Iowa.
Wegher rushed for 641yards his freshman year for the Hawkeyes. He then left the team after two days of fall camp his sophomore year for personal reasons. Wegher was absent from the team for the entirety of the past season, and he was relased from his scholarship just before Iowa’s bowl game against Missouri on December 28.
Wegher reportedly spoke with Bob Stoops, Thursday about walking on at Oklahoma. Today, he told NewsOK that he is planning to travel to OU this weekend and enroll while getting everything else figured out. The Oklahoman also reported that Wegher said.
“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity Coach Stoops and the University of Oklahoma are giving me.”
Wegher announced that he has been a Sooner fan since he was young because his aunt had a barber shop on the Oklahoma campus. He told the Des Moines Register that he “can’t wait to go down there and be part of that tradition.”
Wegher, Jewel Hampton and Adam Robinson; the three main running backs from the 2009-2010 seasons are now absent from Iowa for various reasons. Marcus Coker, the stand-out true freshman who rushed for 219 yards in the Insight Bowl on December 28, 2010 remains.
