After previously naming only upper classmen Jordan Kovacs, Troy Woolfolk and Mike Martin starters, Brady Hoke has named an under classmen a defensive starter, Thomas Gordon. Gordon, a sophomore, will line up next to Jordan Kovacs. The Detroit native will serve as an enforcer in the Michigan defensive backfield. In nine appearances last year, Gordon lined up as a hybrid Linebacker, where he accrued 2 sacks and 4 tackles for a loss. Hybrid Linebackers do not exist in a Greg Mattison defense, so the move to insert Gordon as a starter was a bit of a surprise. In his high school days, Gordon was a 3 star recruit that played in a defense with another Michigan defender, William Campbell. The Wolverines hope that Campbell will see a player who was less heralded from his high school, that is now starting, and it will light a fire under him. Until then, Thomas Gordon will be Michigan’s lone defensive starter from Class Tech.
