Bruce Davis Leaves Program
Senior linebacker Bruce Davis made headlines in Iowa City on Monday when it was announced that he was leaving the program. He cited personal reasons as his reason for the exit. Davis saw little action in 2008, his redshirt freshman season. He was primarily a special teams player in 2009, but saw some action at linebacker. The injury bug bit Davis last year as he only saw action in the first 3 games before suffering an injury in the Arizona game.
Why Kirk Ferentz and the Iowa program always wish the departing players good fortunes, this leaves a big problem for the Hawkeyes. James Morris is Iowa’s current middle linebacker. Bruce Davis was listed as the backup in two deeps. The two deeps came out earlier today with Davis listed, so clearly this was an urgent thing. Starting outside linebacker Tyler Neilsen too has been banged up. If you have seen Morris at outside linebacker during some of the plays it is for that reason.
Christian Kirksey and Anthony Hitchens have split a lot of the snaps with the first team, so it isn’t crazy to see one getting looks at middle linebacker in practice in case anything should happen to Morris. Morris is the next great linebacker, so the lack of depth behind him presents problems for the coaching staff. True freshman Melvin Spears may have the opportunity to crack the rotation, but it will be interesting to see what happens with the 3 linebacker positions.
Best of luck to Bruce Davis who has spent 4+ seasons in the Iowa program and had some hardships along the way.
