What started out as a small Facebook group has now expanded into a nationally known event. On Saturday, Hawkeye fans will pay tribute to former safety Brett Greenwood by wearing green to the game vs. Louisiana-Monroe.
Greenwood was rushed to the hospital on September 9 after a workout at Pleasant Valley High School in Bettendorf. It was reported his heart had stopped beating. Greenwood was transferred to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, were he has since been in a coma.
The Facebook group started with a few followers but is now up to over 4,700, primarily students. The tribute has flooded Hawkeye Football forums on Rivals and Scout.
A few years ago fans tried to start a “Go Green for Shonn Greene” event. The students had a fair turnout, but this tribute has been much more publicized. A website had even decided to make green shirts with the number 30 on the front in honor of Greenwood. Several stores in Iowa City have also started to sell green shirts with a white Tigerhawk on the front.
It is highly doubtful to see 70,585 Hawkeye fans in green, but the love that this tribute has gotten has been astonishing. You see little Facebook groups like this all the time, but I don’t think that anyone ever thought it would get to this level. Hawkeye fans everywhere are sending emails, text messages, and facebook posts making sure their friends know to wear green on Saturday. Whether 10,000 or 30,000 show up in green, you can bet that 70,585 will be thinking of Brett Greenwood on Saturday.
