What Gunner Kiel's Commitment to LSU Means for Notre Dame

By

On Tuesday afternoon, the country’s top ranked quarterback, Gunner Kiel, finally made his decision on where he is going to play football for the next four seasons. Kiel’s decision came down to Vanderbilt, Notre Dame and LSU, but in the end, the high school senior picked the Tigers.

Adding Kiel to this year’s class would have been nice. He is a tremendous talent who could start early in his career with Jarrett Lee and Jordan Jefferson gone after this season for Les Miles and the Tigers.

Kiel wasn’t necessarily a huge need for the Irish in this class though. Tommy Rees still has two years of eligibility and Andrew Hendrix and Everett Golson have plenty of years ahead of them as well. Plus, the Irish are said to be in on with many of the top QB’s across the country in next year’s class.

The Irish can now move on from Kiel and turn their attention to other recruits. Notre Dame might not exactly be done at the quarterback position in this class either. Within the last couple of weeks, Brian Kelly gave a scholarship offer to Devin Fuller as an athlete, but now it is for him to play under center.

Offering a scholarship and talking to Fuller at this late stage of the recruiting season makes him a long shot to commit to ND, but if you can get him in on a visit, anything can happen. There is a reason why the beauty and mystique of the Notre Dame campus has won over so many recruits over the last several years.

Kiel not committing also opens up another scholarship offer for other prospects who have yet to pledge to a school and Notre Dame is in on plenty with them. There are still at least 4-5 to kids that the Irish are looking at to add to the secondary and with Kiel not coming, it could mean several of them could commit to play football in South Bend next September.

You never want to lose out on top talent in the recruiting game, but Kiel was a kid that Kelly and his staff could have afforded to lose out on. Best of luck to him at LSU.
