Texas 4-Star 2013 QB J.T. Barrett Commits to Ohio State

With the arrival of Urban Meyer in Columbus, Ohio State football fans had faith that recruits would follow and the Buckeyes would see a transformation back to being at the top of the standings in the Big 10 Conference.

With Braxton Miller already in place at quarterback, Urban Meyer had the luxury of looking down the road for a signal-caller who could continue to build on the framework Miller could build.

Wichita Falls Rider quarterback J.T. Barrett has been ranked by almost all scouting organizations as one of the top quarterbacks in the 2013 class in the state of Texas, if not one of the state’s best players overall.

Once thought to be torn between the Texas Longhorns and TCU Horned Frogs, Barrett made a somewhat surprising announcement today by committing to Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes.

J.T. seemed completely at ease with his decision, stating:

I feel Ohio State is the place for me, and I felt if I would have went somewhere else, I would be missing out. I wanted to be a part of the Buckeye family.

Barrett, a 6’1″, 210 pound dual-threat QB, ran for over 1,500 yards and threw for over 1,600 in his junior season, showing the ability to both throw with ease from a protected pocket, but also to scramble into the open field and pick up yardage with his legs.

In other words, Barrett is a perfect fit for an Urban Meyer offense which is certain to be predicated on elusive quarterbacks who can make plays when, and if, the pocket happens to break down around them.

While his straight-line speed is far from blinding– his most recent 40 yard dash time was clocked around 4.89– Barrett’s quick feet and natural elusiveness more than make up for his down-field speed.

Assuming Meyer can surround Barrett with a couple of solid running backs in the 2013 class, the Wichita Falls native will have no problem being a competitor for the starting quarterbacking job once Braxton Miller moves on from Columbus.

In this case, a loss for Texas and TCU is a huge win for Urban Meyer, a win which will soon become the norm rather than the exception to the rule as the Buckeyes work back toward national prominence.
