Colonie Central High School Football Looks to Rebound

By Rich Currao

“It’s getting better all the time” is what Beatles’ Paul McCartney called out in 1967.  Only to have John Lennon respond with, “It couldn’t get much worse.”  For the 2012 Colonie Central High School football team, no lyric in American pop music could be closer to the truth.  The Raiders are coming off an abysmal 2011 season that saw them put up a 1-8 record.  Their lone victory in 2011 came on the final game of the season against Albany High School.  One wonders if this final game win is something for the Albany suburban high school football team to build off of?  Most would answer, “hardly.”  When you consider that the Albany Falcons went 0-9 themselves for 2011, you are left to believe that 2012 could be the same ol’ song for the High School Football Raiders.

The Raiders have been led by head coach Mike Ambrosio since 1999.  In his first season, coach Ambrosio and the Raiders were able to post an impressive 7-2 record, but have not been able to duplicate that regular season success is subsequent years.  The Raiders did participate in the 2002 Sectional Finals when they were defeated by perennial juggernaut, the Plainsmen of the  Shenendehowa High School Football program, but have not played .500 football since.

On August 13th, the dreaded “two-a-days” practice sessions will begin for Colonie Central High School football in hopes to erase the prior season from its memory.   Most have to believe that 2011 was indeed rock bottom and hope that “better” is all it can get.  I mean, It couldn’t get much worse.  Could it? 0-9. Yikes.  I guess it could.

Stay tuned.  Next I hope to chat with Coach Ambrosio to see how he feels about this forthcoming season.
