2012 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award Watch List

By Chris Lionetti

Johnny Unitas is known by many to be one of, if not, the most prolific quarterback to ever play the game of football. Unitas passed away in 2002 but his name and honor survive as the namesake for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award. The award is given annually to the nation’s best quarterback.

The watch list was recently released for the 2012 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and features many of college football’s greatest signal-callers.

The ACC and Big-12 have the most honorees on the list with 6 each. The SEC is next in line with four athletes on the list.

Names to watch:

-USC’s Matt Barkley is the frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy and almost every award he is eligible for. Barkley would have been drafted in the top 5 had he left school but he stayed in school and the sky is the limit this year.

-Michigan’s Denard Robinson is a dynamic playmaker but is more athlete than he is quarterback. If he can learn to become a better passer, he may earn himself the Golden Arm Award.

-Georgia’s Aaron Murray has broken most of the school’s passing records in his two year tenure and will go for the career mark for touchdown passes this season. The Bulldogs are in the spotlight and if Murray can limit the interceptions, he can find himself vying for the Golden Arm Award with Barkley.
