NCAA Football: Michael Dyer heading to Prairie View A&M

By Jeremy Cabler

Michael Dyer is one the move once again.

The one time Auburn Tiger, and National Champion RB will suit up for the Prairie View A&M Tigers of the SWAC.

After a stellar performance in the BCS Title Game as a freshman, and running for another 1,000 yards as a sophomore. Dyer was suspended for Auburn’s Bowl game against Virginia, and ultimately released after violating team rules.

He enrolled at Arkansas State and initially appealed for immediate eligibility so he wouldn’t have to redshirt. Once that was denied there were rumors circulating that he would instead transfer to Pittsburgh State so he could play immediately in 2012.

After he was denied, Dyer confirmed his commitment to Arkansas State “I’ve decided to come back, sit out and do what’s best to help my teammates.” Dyer said to Arkansassports360.com

Unfortunately, his tenure at Arkansas State ended before it even began. Dyer was pulled over in Arkansas and was found with a handgun and marijuana in his possession. “I’m truly disappointed that it didn’t work out here at ASU for Mike. I wish Mike nothing but the best in the future.” Said Arkansas State head Coach Gus Malzahn.

So Dyer finds his third different team in three years.

Dyer, a former five star recruit should easily become the Panthers top offensive weapon. Last season Prairie View went with a running back-by-committee approach with Fred Anderson rushing for 540 yards with 5 TDs and Le’Darryae Groover adding 519 yards with the TDs. Both RBs will return this season.

Prairie View A&M has seen a bit of a resurrection as a football team lately. In 2009 they won the SWAC under the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Henry Frazier. In 2010 the Panthers went on to a 7-4 record but stumbled a bit last season as they went 5-6. This is not bad considering the Panthers lost 80 straight games from 1989 to 1998.

One interesting thing of note is on November 3rd two SEC RBs will be reunited.  Dyers Panthers host Alabama State led by former Georgia Bulldog RB Isaiah Crowell.

It’s likely that Dyers stop at Prairie View will only last for one season. So his window to prove to NFL scouts is closing quickly. Dyer has early round talent as a RB, and will get a shot in the NFL, but what was once a promising career, as taken an abrupt nose dive. This is his last chance to salvage what little of an NFL opportunity he has.
