Brett Favre Wins High School Coaching Debut

Oak Grove only took 44 seconds into their first offensive series to score a touchdown, and it was on play installed just the week before by their new offensive coordinator, Brett Favre.

The play was designed to free up receiver Kelvin Winston for a big play. Quarterback Kirk McCarty took the snap, and quick pitched to quarterback Cameron Myers, who had been lined up in the slot; Myers dropped behind the line of scrimmage and threw a bomb pass down the field to the streaking receiver Winston for a touchdown.

The Warriors went on to demolish Sumrall 64-6 Friday at Warrior Field in the season opener for both teams.

Oak Grove head coach Nevil Barr said when Favre approached him about adding the trick play to the playbook, that he had no hesitation at all.

“No, no, no,” Barr said. “I trust in my offensive coaches — unless it’s just something that’s way out there. Brett wanted to run it early in the game and it worked to perfection.”

QB McCarty credited the offensive line for making things easy on him to make plays:

“They blocked a heck of a game,” he said. “There’s no way to do it without those blocks and those holes that you could’ve driven a train through. We made a lot of blocks tonight that people don’t realize unless they watch the film.”

Brett Favre is probably happy the play worked out in his favor, and it is probably refreshing for him to not have the full spotlight on him as head coach. He can keep designing trick plays and having fun doing it and best of luck to the NFL future Hall of Famer in his high school football pursuits.
