Central Suburban North 2012 Preview

By Andy Schmidt

The 2011 season wasn’t kind of the Central Suburban Conference’s North Division with one team making the playoffs in the Deerfield Warriors, who lost their first round game. The division overall was 19-36 so everyone will be looking for improvement in 2012. Deerfield went the division going undefeated in divisional play but would finish the season 6-4 after losing their first three games of the season before reeling off six straight wins to end the regular season. The final win came against the Highland Park Giants, who like Deerfield had started 0-3 and was on a five-game winning streak heading into the Deerfield game before falling 45-21 to finish 5-4 for the season. The Glenbrook North Titans struggled out the gate to a 1-4 start after going 8-2 in 2010 before winning three of their last four in finishing 4-5. Niles North finished 3-6 for the second straight season while Maine East went 1-8 and Maine West was 0-9 in struggling through the 2011 season.

The 2012 season may be another rough one for the teams in the division with graduation taking a bite into Deerfield. Highland Park does return talented running back Andrew Sledd and could become the team to beat in the division while Glenbrook North returns most of their starters from 2011 and Niles North has three all-conference players coming back. Maine East is looking for their first winning season in almost a quarter century and Maine West may find themselves without a win again in 2012. I’m thinking that in the end that Highland Park will find a way to squeak themselves out a divisional title with Glenbrook North finishing a close second and Niles North and Deerfield finishing right behind.
