If you’re looking for a team to follow besides your own local high school football team, look no further than the Waunakee Warriors. Why you ask? Waunakee is coming into the 2012 season with a remarkable 36-game winning streak. If Waunakee runs the table again this year, they will hold the record for most consecutive wins in state history with 49. Another state title for Waunakee and they would join Stratford, who won six state titles in a row from 2003-08, as the only programs to win four straight championships in state history.
Winning is nothing new to the folks in Waunakee. Besides winning the last three state titles, they also won state championships in 1999 and 2002 and were runner-up in 2001 and 2005. In the last 15 years, the Warriors have won 14 conference championships and have not lost a home game since 1998.
The Warriors start their 2012 campaign with two teams that will definitely put them to the test. In the season opener on August 24 they travel to Monona Grove, a team who has won the Southern Badger Conference three years running and is ranked number 10 in the preseason AP poll Large Division. The next week they welcome DeForest, a team they were able to squeak by in the regular season and playoffs last season.
High school football in Wisconsin is always a fun time of the year. Watching a dynasty like Waunakee and seeing how far they go this year will make this season that much sweeter for not only fans around the state, but this writer as well.
