We have hit the eight day mark and kickoff is right around the corner, so we roll along with our Rant Sports SEC 50 Players in 50 Days preview. We head back to the defensive side of the football and take a look at Georgia Bulldog wide receiver turned defensive back Malcolm Mitchell.
Malcolm Mitchell, DB, Georgia:
The Georgia Bulldogs return nine starters from a 2011 defense that was one of the best in the SEC and ranked fifth nationally in total defense. 2012 looks like it could be a huge year for the Bulldogs, at least on paper. The schedule sets up nicely as they avoid SEC West heavyweights, Alabama, Arkansas and LSU. They also get rival South Carolina in October instead of the normal second week of the season. If returning nine starters off a top five defense isn’t enough, the Bulldogs welcome 2011 Freshman All SEC wide receiver Mitchell to the defensive side of the football.
Mitchell appeared in 11 games with nine starts in 2011. He excelled from the time he stepped on campus. In his first collegiate game versus Boise State, Mitchell caught three balls for 64 yards and a touchdown. He finished up his freshman campaign with 45 receptions for 665 yards and four touchdowns.
Now, Mitchell makes the move to defensive back, a talent-rich position in Athens. But due to probable suspensions, more depth is needed. In the spring, coaches wanted to limit his snaps in the secondary, but after looking like a natural at the position, it’s looking through fall camp that this could be more of a permanent move. The Bulldogs will have a stiff test early, as they travel to new SEC East member, the Missouri Tigers, on Sept. 8.
