Wisconsin High School Football: Week 1 Storylines
The football season kicks off for 194 teams statewide tonight. Yes you read that right, 194 state high school football teams open up play and chances are there is a game near you. Here I give you my top five games to keep an eye on this opening kickoff weekend in the badger state. All games start at 7 p.m.
Minnetonka (MN) @ Arrowhead This game is televised on ESPN3 tonight and features a tough Minnetonka team that is one of the top teams in all of Minnesota. Arrowhead comes in ranked 2 in the preseason AP poll large division.
Waunakee @ Monona Grove If not for the above mentioned game being televised on the ESPN family of networks, this would be my top game to watch. Waunakee comes in as the three-time defending state champion and riding a 36 game winning streak. Monona Grove enters the contest as three-time defending Southern Badger Conference champion and a team that looks poised and ready to take down Waunakee.
Greenwood/Granton @ Assumption The defending Division 7 state champion Greenwood/Granton will get a good look what their team is made of. Greenwood/Granton brings in a new head coach in Jeff Trunkel and they also lost two key offensive starters from last years team.
Brookfield East @ Waukesha West Brookfield East’s DE Alec James, a Wisconsin Badgers recruit, is one of the best defensive players in the state. James and the East defense will have their hands full with Michigan State Spartans recruit TE Dylan Chmura, who is son of former Green Bay Packers tight end Mark Chmura.
Kenosha Bradford @ Hudson Kenosha Bradford is the defending Division 1 state champion and comes in ranked 8 in the preseason AP poll. Top OL Graham Bullmore anchors an offense hungry to get back to Madison and LB Hayden Wertz is one of the top at his position in the state.
High school football is back in Wisconsin and I can’t wait to see how this season plays out. What games are most looking forward to this kickoff weekend?
