OT Riley Norman, Cadillac Opens Up Season With Victory

By David Garrett

Starting off the season with a win is always a good feeling, especially if you haven’t started off the season with a one in a few years. That is the feeling that the Cadillac Vikings are having right now with their 33-20 victory over the Eastern Quakers.

The running game worked out well behind the two big tackles Riley Norman and Jack Ford. As a team they rushed for 196 yards, with 146 yards gained by their junior quarterback Jalen Brooks. He also added 35 yards passing along with 1 passing touchdown and 3 rushing touchdowns. If the line can keep it up, I see more of this from Cadillac. Norman also led the way defensively with 8 tackles as well.

The Quakers tried to make a second half comeback, but it was a too little, too late. They scored on their opening possession in the second half making the score 20-7, but they couldn’t stop a 44-yard pass that made it 27-7. They did score twice more, but they couldn’t keep the Vikings from putting up more points.

Norman and Ford did exactly what I thought they would in this game. They opened up holes and the running backs hit the ones that were created. The running game always works well when you’re making your first move on the second or third level like they were this week.

What I would like to see from Cadillac though is to not rely so much on their quarterback to run as much as he did. We saw that he did go out of the game for a series, one in which the back-up quarterback threw a touchdown pass. It is good to know that he could scramble if his receivers aren’t open, which is a huge asset, but you don’t want him to get hurt either by taking so much punishment. On the other hand, it is good to know that the back-up quarterback has an arm like he does.

Cadillac will look to keep rolling as they host the 0-1 Glenn Bobcats next week. The Bobcats lost to North Farmington Raiders 24-13 in week 1.

Eastern will look to bounce back as they travel to the 1-0 Lowell Red Arrows. The Red Arrows defeated the Rockford Rams in Rockford.
