Adrian Maples Squander Big 1st Half Lead, Lose To Jets

The Adrian Maples thought they were going to cruise to an easy victory at halftime. They were completely shocked when the Carleton Airport Jets stormed back and stole the game in a 25-24 triumph.

Adrian scored the game’s first points in early in the 1st quarter on a 4-yard pass from Hunter Hayes to Jurell Parish. The kick failed and the scored remained a 6-0 for the rest of the quarter.

Then the Maples struck twice in the 2nd. The first time was another Hayes to Parish pass; this one from 23-yards out early in the quarter. The other score was a pass to Michael Hamden for 36 yards as the half expired. The kick once again failed after the second touchdown and the Maples went for two after the other score. It was a running play that failed.

The Jets answered in 3rd with a flurry of points. They started early in the quarter with a 36-yard pass from Brandon Potcova to Scott McCormick. Dylan Raisanen added the extra point that was good. Later, Josh Bernard scored on a 34-yard run and Adam Donnelly added a 2-yard touchdown as well. Both were followed by 2-point conversion attempts where both failed. The Jets had the lead 19-18, but it didn’t last long. The Maple’s Isaac Gradeless broke a 40-yard touchdown run. Their pass attempt for the 2-point conversion failed.

The Maples looked like they were going to hold on, but late in the 4th the Jets took the late lead when Potcova scored on a 1-yard run. The 2-point failed, but it was enough for the Jets to win 25-24.

Adrian was led through the air by Hayes, who was 11-26 for 159 yards with 3 touchdowns and an interception. The leading rusher was Gradeless who had 23 carries for 125 yards with a touchdown. Parish was the top receiver with three catches for 63 yards and two touchdowns.

Carleton Airport’s quarterback Potcova was 7-12 for 112 yards with a touchdown as well as a rushing touchdown. They were lead on the ground by Donnelly who had 19 carries for 110 yards and a touchdown. Josh Bernard also had 12 carries for 99 yards and a touchdown. The leading receiver was McCormick with three catches for 91 yards.

The Maples had a balanced offense of 123 rushing yards to 159 yards passing. The offensive output has to get better though, not that this was horrible, but they seem to be sinking back into what they did last year. They do need to work on their kicking game too. If they make at least one of their extra points they are tied or even win this game. If they can shore that part of the offense up, I think this time will be just fine.

The defense in the first half was spectacular, but they need to put a full game together if they want to win. The effort wthat as given in the second half needs to get better. They ended up giving up 293 yards on the ground. That is going to be something that definitely needs improvement. Allowing that many yards on the ground is not a recipe for success; you aren’t going to win many games while giving up that many yards on the ground.

The Adrian Maples, in their next game, will host the 0-1 Fenton Tigers. The Tigers lost a close game at the Linden Eagles 17-15.

The Carleton Airport Jets will be on the road again when they go to play the 1-0 Riverview Pirates. The Pirates defeated the Crestwood Chargers 30-28 at their place.
